06 May Thinking of having a destination wedding? Here’s what you need to know
That once-in-a-lifetime feeling people get coupled with dreams of traveling the world and having a great time with loved ones explains the hype of destination weddings. While this will be the highlight of the year for some people, this is not for everyone and it’s important to weigh all options when planning.
For those who want a more relaxed approach to planning their wedding, a destination wedding might just be the way to go. And if there’s enough time and energy to accommodate guests while not minding how stressful traditional weddings can get, a destination wedding might not be such a big deal.
Just before committing to that wedding getaway, here are some things to note:
- Get prepared for a good number of guests not showing up – From bridesmaids to groomsmen and relatives, it’s not unusual for key people to miss the destination wedding due to budget and time constraints. This is the biggest downside for a lot of people
- Understand the legal requirements for getting married in the destination wedding location – There’s nothing worse than running into legal issues before, during or after your joyful day. These legal requirements differ depending on where you get married, and it would be less complicated to have a civil marriage ceremony in advance in your country of residence.
- Be mindful of the destination’s climate – Imagine holding your wedding on a rainy day with a thunderstorm to supplement. That’ll be a painful mess. And how about holding the wedding on the beach with lousy spring breakers creating a scene? These are situations to guard against in advance. Also, be mindful of the appropriate outfits as it wouldn’t be a pretty sight to be dripping in sweat in a sunny destination.
- Embrace the fact that most of the planning will be out of your control – From local bands canceling at the last minute to flights getting canceled or delayed, be prepared for the worst and the likelihood of not being able to manage every change. It’s not unheard of for vendors to make changes without consent either. Try not to lose sleep over what you can’t control but rather savor the essence of the destination.
Keep in mind what’s most important on that special day which is being surrounded and supported by loved ones. Try to be flexible and don’t let the occasion not being what you envisioned in the worst-case scenario ruin your beautiful day!
